Description

Function and technical context

The turbocharger is the component responsible for forcing a greater amount of air into the engine cylinders, increasing the density of the air-fuel mixture and, with it, the power and efficiency of the engine. It operates within the intake and exhaust system, harnessing the kinetic energy of the combustion gases to drive a turbine that compresses the inlet air. In highly demanding marine and industrial diesel engines such as the TAD, TD, TWD and TID series from Volvo Penta, the turbo works continuously under high temperatures and pressures, so its mechanical integrity is decisive for the overall performance of the machine. A turbocharger in poor condition causes a notable loss of power, increased fuel consumption, black smoke in the exhaust and, in serious cases, contamination of the engine oil due to internal leaks.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a damaged turbocharger are an abnormal hissing or metallic noise during acceleration, the presence of blue or black smoke from the exhaust pipe, a progressive loss of thrust and increased oil consumption without a visible external leak. It is recommended to inspect the turbo at each major engine overhaul or in the event of any of these signs, since excessive axial play in the turbine shaft or wear of the bearings can lead to a catastrophic failure that affects internal engine components. Replacing it preventively at the first symptoms avoids higher cost breakdowns and guarantees the operability of the boat or industrial facility at all times.
