Description

Function and technical context

The turbocharger is the component responsible for forcing a greater amount of air into the engine cylinders, increasing the density of the air-fuel mixture and, with it, the power and performance of the engine. This turbo acts directly in the air supply system of Volvo Penta engines of the TD, TID and TWD series, taking advantage of the energy of the exhaust gases to drive the turbine and compress the intake air. Its correct operation is critical: a deteriorated turbocharger causes severe loss of power, increased fuel consumption, excessive emissions of black or blue smoke, and can lead to serious damage to the engine block if not attended to in time. Manufactured by SLP (Swedish Lorry Parts), a Swedish specialist with extensive experience in spare parts for Volvo Penta engines, guaranteeing fit and performance in accordance with the engine manufacturer's specifications.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a turbocharger in poor condition are the appearance of bluish or black smoke from the exhaust, a notable drop in power and acceleration, abnormal noises (whistling or rattling) coming from the turbo during operation, or the presence of oil in the intake manifold. It is recommended to inspect the turbocharger at each major seasonal service and, in any case, at the first signs of loss of performance or unusual noise, since operating with a damaged turbo can compromise engine components of much higher cost. Preventive replacement when detecting play in the turbine shaft or oil leaks in the turbo joints avoids breakdowns at sea that are difficult to resolve.
