Description
Function and technical context
The 1676432 seal is a dynamic sealing seal that acts in the interface area between the rotating shaft and the transmission or engine block casing, preventing the leakage of lubricating oil to the outside of the assembly. Works on the lubrication and transmission system of Volvo Penta marine engines, subjected to continuous friction, pressure variations and exposure to fluids in marine operating conditions. Its integrity is decisive in maintaining the correct level of lubricant in the circuit: if the seal fails, the oil progressively escapes, depriving the internal components of lubrication and causing accelerated wear, overheating of the bearings and, ultimately, serious breakdowns in the drive train. Furthermore, a deteriorated seal allows moisture and external contaminants to enter the interior of the engine, compromising the useful life of the entire drive assembly.
When to replace this part?
The most common symptoms of a shaft seal in poor condition are the appearance of stains or traces of oil in the seal area, a progressive decrease in the lubricant level without apparent cause and, in advanced cases, the presence of oil in the bilge water or on the water surface around the shaft. It is recommended to inspect the condition of the seal during each seasonal maintenance and replace it whenever the assembly is dismantled for any other intervention in the area, since the cost of the seal is minimal compared to that of a repair due to lubrication failure in navigation. Replacing this component preventatively prevents costly breakdowns at sea and prolongs the life of the bearings and driveshaft.
