Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes such as the Posillipo 125x80x20 play a fundamental role in the cathodic protection of the hull and submerged metal accessories of the boat. Made of high-purity zinc alloy, this anode acts as a negative electrode in the galvanic cell that forms in salt or brackish water, consuming itself to protect more noble metals such as stainless steel, bronze or aluminum of the propeller, shafts and stern accessories. Without effective cathodic protection, galvanic corrosion progressively attacks the metal parts of the boat, causing costly structural damage and compromising the integrity of the drivetrain and hull. The 125x80x20mm profile makes it particularly suitable for installation on keels, rudders and stern structures where a solid and durable contact surface is required.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the Posillipo anode needs to be replaced is when it has lost between 50% and 60% of its mass: if it appears very reduced, irregular or with whitish and powdery areas, it has stopped protecting correctly. It is recommended to inspect the anodes at least once a season – ideally at each docking – and replace them preventively before launching the boat again if they show obvious wear, regardless of the time elapsed. Changing the anode on time is the cheapest investment to avoid corrosion of shafts, propellers and hardware, whose repair or replacement can multiply the cost of a simple zinc anode by a hundred.
