Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are the galvanic shield that protects the submerged metallic elements of a vessel against electrochemical corrosion. This MMI anode with dimensions 500x80x40 mm works within the cathodic protection system of the hull or the metal parts of the propulsion assembly, acting as a sacrificial electrode that corrodes preferably instead of the noble metal of propellers, shafts, rudders and hull structures. Its correct installation guarantees the structural integrity of the submerged components, preventing pitting, metal loss and mechanical failures that can compromise the safety and navigability of the vessel. A depleted or missing anode directly exposes aluminum or stainless steel to the destructive action of galvanic currents, especially in ports with a high density of vessels or in waters with high conductivity.

When to replace this part?

The unmistakable sign that the sacrificial anode must be replaced is when it has lost between 50% and 60% of its mass, since below that threshold it does not offer sufficient cathodic protection. Visually, an exhausted anode presents a highly eroded, irregular surface with a notable reduction in volume compared to the installed state. The inspection and replacement must be carried out at least once a season, coinciding with the annual beaching; In especially aggressive waters or boats in continuous use, an inspection is recommended every six months to prevent the metal elements from being left unprotected between maintenance.
