Description

Function and technical context

The trim sensor is the component responsible for detecting and transmitting the angular position of the outboard motor with respect to the transom, sending an electrical signal to the trim indicator on the instrument panel. It is part of the hydraulic trim and trim system, working closely with the trim cylinder and hydraulic power unit. Its correct operation is essential so that the skipper can precisely adjust the propulsion angle during navigation, optimizing performance at different speeds and sea conditions. When this sensor deteriorates or fails, the trim indicator stops showing the actual position of the engine, which prevents efficient trimming and can lead to high fuel consumption, loss of planing or damage to the trim unit due to incorrect maneuvers.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of trim sensor failure are the indicator needle that does not move, oscillates erratically or always reads the same value regardless of the actual position of the engine. It is also common for the indicator to show incorrect values intermittently, especially after rough seas or after a prolonged period of inactivity of the boat. It is recommended to check the sensor during each seasonal maintenance and replace it if any abnormal reading occurs, since operating without reliable trim information compromises safety and navigation efficiency.
