Function and technical context

The throttle cable is the mechanical element responsible for transmitting the movement from the helmsman's control lever to the carburetor or throttle body of the outboard motor, directly regulating the fuel flow and, therefore, the engine revolutions. It is part of the gas control system and works closely with the control housing and the carburetor linkage. A cable in poor condition causes an irregular throttle response, loss of control over revolutions and even the inability to reduce or increase speed safely, compromising the maneuverability of the boat.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a worn or deteriorated accelerator cable are hard or jerky movement of the throttle lever, excessive play in the control, lack of proportional response to the drive or the appearance of visible broken threads at the ends of the cable. Continuous exposure to the marine environment—humidity, salt and vibrations—accelerates the internal corrosion of the cable within its sheath, so it is advisable to inspect it during each seasonal maintenance. Replacing it preventively at the first sign of rigidity or deterioration avoids being left without acceleration control during navigation.
