PISTON
Description
Function and technical context
The piston is the central component of the engine unit responsible for transforming combustion energy into linear movement, subsequently transmitting that effort to the crankshaft through the connecting rod. It works inside the cylinder, subjected to continuous cycles of compression, explosion, expansion and exhaust, supporting extreme temperatures and pressures in each work cycle. Its integrity is decisive in maintaining the correct compression of the cylinder: a worn or damaged piston causes loss of compression, increased fuel consumption, the appearance of smoke in the exhaust and a notable reduction in the power delivered by the engine. In outboard and outboard marine engines, replacing the piston along with its rings is a common intervention within a rectification or deep overhaul of the engine.
When to replace this part?
The most common symptoms that indicate that the piston needs inspection or replacement are: excessive oil consumption, bluish or whitish smoke in the exhaust, loss of compression detected by a compressor gauge, metallic knocking inside the block (known as "piston noise" or piston slap) and difficult starting with a cold engine. It is recommended to inspect the condition of the piston and its rings whenever the block is reworked, after severe impacts or overheating, or when the engine accumulates a high number of operating hours. Acting preventively at the first symptoms avoids major damage to the block, liner or crankshaft, which is considerably more expensive repairs.
