Function and technical context

The oil seal acts as a watertight seal at the exit points of the outboard motor's rotating shafts, preventing the lubricant from escaping to the outside and at the same time preventing the entry of water, dirt and abrasive particles into the interior. In high displacement Suzuki engines, this component works directly in the lubrication system, maintaining the necessary oil pressure to protect the moving elements of the propeller. A deteriorated seal compromises the integrity of the lubrication circuit: oil loss causes accelerated wear of the crankshaft, camshaft and other critical parts, which can lead to major engine failure if not detected in time.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of an oil seal in poor condition are the appearance of oil stains or traces in the seal area, abnormal lubricant consumption without apparent cause and, in advanced cases, bluish smoke during start-up or operation. It is recommended to inspect the condition of the seal during each seasonal maintenance and replace it whenever the shaft is disassembled or a thorough engine inspection is performed, especially in units with many hours of work. Replacing it preventively is much more economical than taking on an engine repair due to insufficient lubrication at sea.
