Function and technical context

The water pump cover is a structural component of the outboard motor's seawater cooling system, whose mission is to properly seal and house the impeller and other internal elements of the pump. It acts as a casing seal, maintaining the necessary pressure so that the flow of cooling water circulates without leaks from the lower intake to the engine block. A deterioration or breakage of this cover causes flow losses, air entry into the circuit or external leaks that directly compromise the cooling of the engine, with the consequent risk of overheating and serious damage to the propeller.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms that indicate that the water pump cover needs to be checked or replaced are: visible loss of water from the bottom of the engine foot, reduced control water jet ("tell-tale"), temperature alarm or engine overheating. It is recommended to inspect this part during each maintenance intervention of the water pump kit, usually every 300-400 hours of operation or every two seasons, since continuous exposure to salt water accelerates corrosion and cracking of the plastic. Replacing it preventively along with the impeller and seals avoids breakdowns at sea that can be very costly.
