SUZUKI SELECTOR SPRING
Description
Function and technical context
The selector spring is part of the gear change mechanism of the transmission system in Suzuki outboard engines, acting as a retaining and positioning element within the reversing selector assembly. Its function is to ensure that the selector is correctly locked in each position—forward, neutral or reverse—precisely transmitting the helmsman's commands to the gears of the bevel group. A spring in poor condition compromises the correct interlocking of the gears, and may cause involuntary gear shifts, difficulty engaging or, in serious cases, loss of propulsion while navigating.
When to replace this part?
The most common symptoms of a worn or broken selector spring are: difficulty engaging or disengaging gears, changing position with imprecise or excessive shock, and a feeling of "skating" or lack of retention when selecting forward or reverse gear. It is recommended to inspect this component at each check of the transmission box or when maintenance of the conical group is performed, generally every two seasons or in the event of any of the symptoms described. Replacing the selector spring preventively during a stranding avoids transmission breakdowns that could leave the boat unsteered far from port.
