The circlip is a precision retaining element used inside outboard motors to keep components such as shafts, pistons or gears correctly positioned within their housings. When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms that indicate that a circlip needs to be replaced are the presence of internal play or knocking during navigation, the appearance of metallic noises in the engine block or gearbox, and the disassembly of any subassembly in which the circlip has become deformed, open or with visible fatigue marks. Since it is a low-cost element that is exposed to cyclic stresses and the marine environment, the professional recommendation is to replace it whenever the assembly to which it belongs is dismantled, without reusing the previous circlip. Incorporating a new circlip in each maintenance intervention avoids unexpected revisions and guarantees the reliability of the engine on each outing to sea.
