Function and technical context

The drive pinion is a fundamental bevel gear in the transmission system of small displacement outboard motors. This component transmits the rotational power of the crankshaft to the propeller through the tail shaft, allowing the vertical movement of the engine to be converted into horizontal rotation of the propeller. Its correct operation is essential to ensure efficient propulsion, since any wear or damage to the pinion teeth causes loss of power, abnormal vibrations in the transmission and possible entry of water into the gearbox.

When to replace this part?

The drive pinion should be inspected when symptoms such as metallic noises during acceleration, excessive vibration in the tailshaft, difficulty engaging gears, or unexplained loss of traction are detected. Although there is no fixed replacement interval, it is advisable to check the condition of the gear at each seasonal maintenance and especially after sailing in water with debris or after impacts against submerged objects. Preventative replacement of the sprocket, along with associated drivetrain components, prevents costly repairs and unexpected strandings on voyages.
