Function and technical context

Shaft seals are the sealing elements that seal the transmission shaft at the junction between the outboard motor and the gearcase, preventing the entry of salt or fresh water into the bearings and internal gears of the transmission. They operate within the transmission and propulsion system, subjected to continuous rotation, vibrations and permanent contact with the aquatic environment. A deteriorated seal breaks the hydraulic seal, allowing water to penetrate inside the gearcase and attack the metal components of the gearbox, which can result in severe corrosion, bearing seizure and total transmission failure. This seal kit is specifically designed for Suzuki DF series motors, guaranteeing precise fit and lasting sealing in accordance with the manufacturer's specifications.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a defective gearcase seal are the presence of water mixed with the gearbox oil—the lubricant takes on a milky or whitish appearance—, visible oil leaks in the gearcase area or an abnormal increase in play in the propeller shaft. It is recommended to inspect the condition of the gearcase seals at each gearbox oil change, generally every season or every 100 operating hours, depending on usage conditions. Preventively replacing this kit during scheduled maintenance is the best way to avoid serious gearbox failure, whose repair is considerably more costly than seal replacement.
