Description

Function and technical context

The Ø 100 mm aluminum disc stern anode is a cathodic protection element designed to safeguard the submerged metal parts of the boat against galvanic corrosion. It acts as a sacrificial metal in the aft area, absorbing electrochemical degradation that would otherwise affect the tail shaft, propeller, rudder and other metal surfaces in contact with water. Being made of aluminum, it is especially suitable for use in salty and brackish waters, where galvanic activity is more aggressive. Its circular disc geometry facilitates compact and secure mounting in the stern area, guaranteeing effective coverage without interfering with the hydrodynamic flow of the boat.

When to replace this part?

An anode must be replaced when it has lost between 50% and 60% of its mass, an unequivocal sign that it has fulfilled its protective function and no longer offers sufficient active surface to continue acting as a sacrifice. The inspection should be carried out at least once a season, ideally during the annual beaching, although in areas with very aggressive water or vessels with a high density of electrical installations, a semi-annual inspection may be necessary. Replacing the anode preventively is the most economical measure to avoid galvanic corrosion in propellers, shafts and stern appendages, the repair or replacement of which involves a much higher cost.
