ANODE
Description
Function and technical context
Sacrificial anodes are fundamental elements in the cathodic protection of boats, responsible for preventing galvanic corrosion in the submerged metal parts of the hull, tail shaft, propeller and components of the outboard or inboard engine. This anode with reference TEN00155 acts as a negative electrode in the galvanic pair, oxidizing in a controlled manner to protect metal parts of greater structural value, such as cast iron or bronze, against the electrochemical attack of salt, brackish or fresh water. Without adequate anodic protection, galvanic corrosion progresses silently and can compromise the integrity of critical components such as the drive shaft, gearbox or motor casing, leading to serious and costly breakdowns.
When to replace this part?
The clearest sign that a sacrificial anode needs replacement is when it has lost more than 50% of its mass, presenting an irregular, fragmented surface or with visible advanced erosion. As a general rule of preventive maintenance in nautical, it is recommended to inspect the anodes at least once a season - coinciding with the annual beaching - and replace them whenever wear exceeds half of their volume, regardless of the time elapsed. Replacing the TEN00155 anode preventively is the most economical measure to avoid corrosion damage to transmission and propulsion parts that can involve repairs of several thousand euros.
