Description
Function and Technical Context
The stator is the fixed component of the ignition and electrical charging system in outboard motors, responsible for generating the alternating current that powers the charge coil, lighting systems and battery through the rectifier. It works within the CDI (capacitor discharge ignition) ignition system together with the magnetic flywheel, creating the electromagnetic field necessary to produce electricity as the engine rotates. In high-displacement OMC outboard motors—such as the 200, 225, 250, 275 and 300 HP Johnson and Evinrude series models—a faulty stator causes intermittent ignition misfires, battery charging loss, unexpected shutdowns or inability to start, compromising the safety and operability of the vessel. It replaces OMC references 583415, 584287 and 763765, guaranteeing direct compatibility with the original powerheads of these series.
When to Replace This Component?
The most common symptoms of a faulty stator are: engine that starts with difficulty or shuts down without warning at certain RPMs, spark misfires in one or several cylinders, battery that does not charge during operation or erratic voltmeter readings. Unlike mechanical wear parts, the stator does not have a fixed replacement interval in hours, but it is recommended to check its resistance with a multimeter at each seasonal service, especially on engines that have suffered overheating or saltwater ingress into the ignition cover. Replacing it preventively at the first signs of trouble prevents being stranded by an electrical failure in open water, since its total failure completely stops the engine.
