Description
Function and Technical Context
The stator is the static component of the charging and ignition system in outboard engines, responsible for generating alternating current through electromagnetic induction when the magnetic flywheel rotor rotates around it. It forms part of the ignition and electrical charging system, being the primary power source that supplies the ignition coils and battery through the rectifier. A faulty stator causes intermittent or complete ignition failures, power loss, inability to maintain battery charge, and in advanced cases, complete engine shutdown while underway. This stator, with OMC part numbers 584287 and 763765, is specifically designed for high-displacement Johnson and Evinrude V6 engines, guaranteeing electrical and mechanical compatibility with the magnetic flywheels of these powerplants.
When to Replace This Part?
The most common symptoms of a defective stator include difficulty starting in cold conditions, intermittent engine cutouts at high RPM, absence of spark in one or several cylinders, and battery that does not charge during operation. As a component subject to continuous heat and vibrations, it is recommended to inspect the stator at each seasonal service, paying special attention to the integrity of the winding insulation and the absence of signs of burnout or short circuit. Replacing the stator preventively at the first electrical symptoms avoids serious breakdowns offshore and the costly towing of the vessel to port.
