Function and Technical Context

The recoil spring is the component responsible for storing and releasing the mechanical energy necessary to start the outboard motor through the manual rope pull starting system. It forms part of the starter rewind mechanism, working in coordination with the reel and starter rope to ensure that the assembly returns to its initial position after each starting attempt. Without a spring in good condition, the starter does not retract the rope correctly, which prevents any manual starting attempt and leaves the vessel inoperative. This spring, with reference 203697 and replacement part number REC93-08663, is specifically designed for OMC engines in the Johnson and Evinrude ranges, covering a very wide variety of 25, 30 and 35 HP models, as well as other series.

When Should This Part Be Replaced?

The most common symptoms of a deteriorated recoil spring are the failure of the rope to retract after releasing the handle, slow or irregular rewind, and in cases of complete breakage, the rope remains completely loose with no recovery tension. As this is a component subjected to repeated cycles of tension and relaxation, it should be inspected during each seasonal maintenance, paying special attention to possible signs of fatigue, permanent deformation or corrosion in the winding. Replacing the spring preventively at the slightest sign of loss of tension avoids being left without manual starting at the most inconvenient moment, especially on boating trips where no alternative electric starting system is available.
