Description
Function and Technical Context
The recoil spring is an essential component within the manual starting system of outboard engines, responsible for accumulating and releasing the energy needed to rotate the crankshaft during pull-cord starting. It works in the starter recoil mechanism, absorbing the tension generated when pulling the handle and returning it in a controlled manner to automatically reposition the rope. Its proper operation is decisive in ensuring reliable starting with each maneuver: a fatigued or broken spring prevents the cord from returning, leaving the engine unusable. This part replaces references 323653, 802479, 878976 (Mercury/Mariner/MerCruiser) and 0338534, 338534 (OMC), and is compatible with Johnson and Evinrude engines in the E10, E15, J10, J15 and other series.
When to Replace This Part?
The most common symptoms of a deteriorated recoil spring are failure of the starting rope to return after releasing the handle, weak or irregular recoil, or complete spring breakage that locks the starter assembly. It is recommended to inspect the condition of the spring during each seasonal service, especially on vessels operating in high humidity and salinity environments, as corrosion accelerates its fatigue. Replacing it preventively at the first signs of wear prevents being stranded while underway without the possibility of manual starting.
