The 12V electromagnetic solenoid is the component that controls electrical flow to the starter motor on outboard marine engines. When to replace this part?

If you experience difficulty starting, a complete lack of response from the starter motor despite a charged battery, or a repetitive clicking sound without the engine turning, it is likely that the solenoid has lost its electrical switching ability. Although there is no fixed maintenance interval for solenoids, it is advisable to inspect their operation every season, especially on boats that remain at anchor for long periods. Preventive replacement of a worn solenoid prevents no start at sea and costly emergency towing operations.
