This starter and trim solenoid acts as a high-current electromagnetic switch within the electrical circuit of the outboard and stationary engine, serving a dual function: on one hand, it closes the circuit between the battery and the starter motor to ignite the engine; on the other hand, it controls the hydraulic trim and tilt system that regulates the inclination angle of the motor-propeller assembly. It operates simultaneously in the ignition system and in the hydraulic trim system, being an essential component for basic vessel operability. A faulty solenoid can prevent engine starting, lock trim adjustment during navigation, or generate intermittent failures that compromise onboard safety. It is compatible with OMC, Mercury, Mariner and MerCruiser engines, replacing references 979774, 0979774, 778021, 803822T and F177917.
When to Replace This Part?
The most common symptoms of a faulty solenoid include the engine not responding to key turn despite a charged battery, a dry click without effective starting, trim that does not raise or lower or that moves erratically and intermittently. Corrosion on electrical terminals and continuous exposure to marine moisture accelerate the deterioration of this component, so it is recommended to inspect the solenoid at each seasonal maintenance. Replacing it preventively at the first symptoms avoids being left without starter or trim control while underway, with the cost and risk that this entails.
