Function and technical context

The crankshaft and camshaft seals are the sealing elements responsible for preventing lubricating oil leakage to the outside of the engine block and, at the same time, preventing water or external contaminants from entering the bearing and journal areas. This kit operates within the lubrication and sealing system of the outboard engine, acting at the crankshaft rotation points where internal crankcase pressure can cause leaks if the rubber lips lose their elasticity. A failure in the seals results directly in loss of lubrication, contamination of the oil with seawater and, in the most severe cases, accelerated wear of internal rotating components that can compromise the complete integrity of the engine.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptoms of deteriorated seals in an outboard engine are the presence of oil stains in the lower area of the engine or in the bilge, a burnt smell from oil contacting hot surfaces and, in water inlet seals, the appearance of whitish emulsion in the oil. It is recommended to inspect and examine the seals at each seasonal maintenance interval, and replace them preventively whenever the engine is opened or the crankshaft is serviced, since the cost of the kit is minimal compared to the risk of serious breakdown while underway. Changing the seals preventively during any scheduled overhaul is the most cost-effective practice to ensure long-term engine sealing integrity.
