This zinc anode for Ferretti propeller with 45 mm diameter shaft acts as sacrificial cathodic protection in the boat's propulsion system, preventing galvanic corrosion from attacking the noble metal components of the shaft and propeller. Being made of zinc, it is especially suitable for use in salt and brackish water, where the electrochemical activity is more aggressive. The anode is consumed in a gradual and controlled manner, protecting the propeller shaft, hub and adjacent transmission elements from premature deterioration. If this component is completely used up without being replaced in time, galvanic corrosion begins to act directly on more expensive parts such as the tail shaft, propeller or horns, potentially compromising the structural integrity of the propulsion system.
When to replace this part?
The clearest sign that the anode needs to be replaced is a visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately 50% of its volume, the cathodic protection is no longer sufficient and must be replaced immediately. In boats regularly used in salt water, the condition of the anodes must be checked at least once a season, coinciding with the annual maintenance beaching; In areas of high conductivity or high galvanic currents, it may be necessary to inspect them every six months. Replacing the anode preventively before it is completely depleted is the most economical measure to avoid costly repairs to the shaft and propeller that would require the boat to be immobilized.
