Description

Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are essential elements in the cathodic protection of outboard motors and marine propulsion systems against galvanic corrosion. This Riva anode for Mercury engines acts as a sacrificial electrode: being made of an alloy with a lower electrochemical potential than the surrounding metals (aluminum of the casing, stainless steel of the shaft, brass of the propeller), it attracts electrolytic corrosion towards itself, preserving the structural integrity of the vital engine components. Without adequate anodic protection, the action of salt or brackish water progressively degrades high-cost parts such as the engine tailpiece, the lower casing or the drive shaft, compromising the safety of the boat and leading to extremely expensive repairs.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that a sacrificial anode needs to be replaced is visible mass loss: when the anode has consumed 50% to 60% of its volume, it has reached the functional limit and can no longer guarantee effective cathodic protection. A completely white, disintegrated or spongy-looking anode indicates that it has been in service for too long. The usual practice in sports and professional boating is to check and replace the anodes at the beginning of each boating season, especially if the boat operates in salt or brackish waters; In areas with high water conductivity or scattered electrical currents (marinas with poor electrical installations), an inspection every six months is recommended. Preventive anode replacement is by far the most cost-effective maintenance measure to prevent degradation of critical drivetrain and propulsion components.
