Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are the electrochemical shield of your boat: when installed in contact with the hull, shaft, propeller or outboard motor, they attract galvanic corrosion to themselves, thus protecting the most expensive structural metal components. This Riva anode, compatible with Mercury and Mercurius engines, acts within the cathodic protection system, a passive but absolutely critical mechanism in marine environments where different metals in contact with salt or brackish water generate destructive galvanic currents. Without correct anodic protection, parts such as the engine block, propeller or drive shaft suffer pitting and accelerated deterioration that can compromise the structural integrity of the boat and lead to serious breakdowns on the water.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that an anode has completed its cycle is the loss of more than 50% of its mass: when the anode is more than half consumed, it has stopped protecting effectively and must be replaced immediately. Inspection and replacement is recommended at least once per nautical season, coinciding with the beaching of the boat to clean the bottom, although in waters with high salinity or areas with intense electrolytic activity it may be necessary to inspect it more frequently. Replacing the anode preventively at the beginning of each season is the most economical maintenance measure to avoid irreversible damage to high-cost components such as the tail shaft, propeller or engine casing.
