Function and technical context

Shaft anodes are cathodic protection elements designed to be mounted directly on the tail shaft of the vessel, acting as an electrochemical sacrifice against galvanic corrosion that affects submerged metal parts. This Reggiani anode for 55 mm shaft (reference TEN00466) protects the drive shaft, propeller and surrounding bronze or stainless steel hardware by preventing galvanic current from attacking the noble metals of the transmission. Its correct installation on the shaft is essential: without this protection, corrosion advances silently and accelerates the premature deterioration of high-cost components such as the shaft, the stern tube bearings and the propeller itself.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that a shaft anode needs to be replaced is when it has lost between 50 and 60% of its mass due to electrolytic wear, or when it has a completely irregular, brittle or whitish surface indicating depletion of the active material. The review and visual inspection must be carried out at least once per nautical season, taking advantage of the ship's stranding; In waters with high electrical conductivity or in ports with strong ambient galvanic current it may be necessary to check it more frequently. Preventatively replacing the anode before it is completely depleted is the most economical measure to avoid costly damage to the axle and driveline.
