Function and technical context

The full radide anode for 100mm shaft is an essential cathodic protection element in the underwater transmission of shaftline vessels. Its mission is to sacrifice itself electrochemically to protect the propulsion shaft, the horn, the stuffing box and the adjacent metal elements against galvanic corrosion caused by the action of salt or brackish water. As it is a complete set, it incorporates all the necessary pieces to cover the 100 mm shaft section, guaranteeing uniform protection throughout the area exposed to the marine environment. If this component is depleted or not renewed in time, the noble metals of the transmission – stainless steel, bronze or brass – are left unprotected and can suffer accelerated and irreversible corrosion that compromises the structural integrity of the propulsion system.

When to replace this part?

Shaft anodes should be inspected at least once a season, coinciding with docking or annual maintenance of the vessel. The clearest sign that replacement is necessary is when the anode has lost more than 50% of its mass: when it appears very reduced, porous or disintegrated, it has stopped offering effective protection. It is recommended to renew the entire radide anode preventively each season without waiting for its complete exhaustion, since the cost of a corroded propulsion shaft or a damaged horn is much higher than that of a routine replacement of the anode.
