Description

Function and technical context

This hexagonal zinc anode for tail shaft is designed to cathodically protect the propulsion shafts of vessels with diameters between 22 and 25 mm against galvanic corrosion produced by the action of salt or brackish water. Its hexagonal geometry facilitates tightening and a firm fit on the shaft, preventing rotation and guaranteeing constant electrical contact with the metal to be protected. Acting as a sacrificial anode, the zinc preferentially corrodes instead of the stainless steel or bronze shaft, preserving the structural integrity of the propulsion line and preventing pitting, electrolysis and material loss in higher cost components. Without adequate cathodic protection, the shaft can suffer accelerated corrosion that compromises the transmission of torque between the engine and the propeller, with the consequent risk of breakage or abnormal vibration during navigation.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes should be inspected at least once a season or each time the vessel leaves the water for a beaching; Their replacement is recommended when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, present a very rough, cracked or uniform grayish white surface that indicates depletion of active zinc. An excessively consumed anode leaves the tail shaft unprotected against electrolysis, which can lead to deep pitting, ovalization of the shaft, and costly shipyard repairs. Replacing it preventively at the beginning of each nautical season is the practice recommended by maintenance technicians to guarantee the useful life of the propulsion system.
