Description

Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are the key element of the cathodic protection system on ships, acting as an electrochemical barrier that preserves submerged metal components against galvanic corrosion. This hexagonal anode for a 100 mm shaft from the Radice brand is installed directly on the tail shaft, offering focused protection in one of the areas most exposed to electrolysis: the transmission system. Being the metal with the lowest potential in the galvanic pair, the anode corrodes in a controlled manner instead of the shaft, horn or stuffing box, avoiding irreparable damage to high-cost components. Its hexagonal geometry facilitates assembly and ensures a firm fit on the axis without risk of displacement during navigation.

When to replace this part?

A shaft anode must be replaced when it has lost between 50% and 60% of its mass, since below that volume it no longer effectively protects the transmission system. The clearest symptoms that the anode is exhausted are the appearance of corrosion pits on the shaft, greenish or whitish discoloration in the horn area and, in advanced cases, visible looseness or deterioration in the gland seals. The inspection is recommended at least once a season, coinciding with the annual beaching; In waters with high conductivity or electrical installations with stray currents, it should also be inspected mid-season. Replacing the anode preventively is the most economical intervention to avoid replacing the shaft or horn, repairs that can paralyze the boat for days.
