Function and technical context

Shaft anodes are cathodic protection elements designed to be installed directly on the tail shaft of the vessel, acting as an electrochemical sacrifice to protect the submerged metal parts - shaft, propeller and horn - against galvanic corrosion. This Radice anode for 60 mm shaft works within the underwater transmission system, creating a potential difference that directs corrosion towards the anode itself instead of towards structural or higher cost components. Its presence is critical in salt and brackish water environments, where the electrolytic action is especially aggressive: without active cathodic protection, the shaft can suffer deep pits that compromise the sealing of the stuffing box, generate abnormal vibrations and can cause premature failure of bearings and coils.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the shaft anode has reached its useful life is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost around 50% of its volume compared to the assembled state, it must be replaced immediately, since its sacrificial capacity is compromised. In areas with high water conductivity or boats with complex electrical installations, wear can be noticeably faster than in previous seasons, so it is advisable to inspect it at each beaching and, at least, renew it once per nautical season. Replacing the anode preventively at the beginning of each campaign is the most recommended practice by specialized naval workshops: the cost of the anode is insignificant compared to that of a shaft repair or changing the horn due to advanced corrosion.
