Description

Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode for 30 mm shaft is the component responsible for protecting the tail shaft and the submerged metal elements of the boat against galvanic corrosion, an electrochemical process that progressively destroys bronze, stainless steel and aluminum alloys in contact with sea or brackish water. Acting as the negative electrode of the galvanic pair, the anode oxidizes in place of the structural components of the propulsion system, preserving the integrity of the shaft, stern tube, propeller and hull closures. A depleted or missing anode exposes the transmission shaft to pitting and accelerated corrosion that can compromise the tightness of the stuffing box and lead to abnormal vibrations or even the disabling of the propulsion system.

When to replace this part?

Shaft anodes must be inspected at least once a season, coinciding with the annual docking of the vessel, and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, present a completely eroded or irregular surface, or active corrosion is observed in the metal areas they were intended to protect. A sure sign of premature exhaustion is the appearance of pitting or reddish discoloration on the stainless steel shaft in the immersion zone. It is recommended that the anode be replaced preventatively at every stranding, regardless of its apparent condition, as the cost of a corroded shaft or driveline repair far exceeds that of a routine anode replacement.
