Detects the position of the camshaft on Suzuki outboard engines DF150, DF175, DF115A, DF140A, DF90A, DF70A, DF60A, DF50A and DF40A, among others. The CMP sensor sends the phase signal to the ECU to synchronize the injection and ignition in each cylinder. Its deterioration causes difficult starts, irregularities at idle or unexpected engine stoppage.

Description

Function and technical context

The CMP sensor (Camshaft Position Sensor) is responsible for detecting the position of the camshaft and sending that signal to the outboard motor ECU. Integrated into the electronic engine management system, it allows fuel injection and ignition to be precisely synchronized, ensuring that each cylinder receives spark and fuel at the exact moment in the cycle. A failure in this sensor can cause difficult starts, loss of power, irregular idling or even complete engine stoppage, as the ECU loses the phase reference necessary to correctly manage engine timing. Timely replacement is critical to maintaining the performance and reliability of your Suzuki outboard drive in all types of boating conditions.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a damaged camshaft position sensor include the malfunction warning light on the panel coming on, jerks or irregularities in throttle response, difficulty starting when cold, and intermittent engine cuts without apparent cause. As it is an electronic component subject to vibrations, saline humidity and thermal variations typical of the marine environment, it is recommended to inspect it at each seasonal inspection and replace it in the event of any error code related to the timing system or the camshaft signal. Acting preventively avoids unexpected groundings and higher cost breakdowns in the injection system.
