Description

Function and technical context

The reinforced rudder disc anode acts as a sacrificial galvanic protector, absorbing electrochemical corrosion that would otherwise attack the structural metal parts of the vessel's rudder and steering blade. Made of zinc (ZN) with a diameter of 140 mm in a reinforced version, it offers a greater mass of active material than standard models, prolonging its useful life in demanding marine environments. It works within the cathodic protection system of the hull and submerged appendages, creating a favorable electrochemical potential difference that diverts corrosion toward the anode itself rather than toward the noble metal of the rudder. Without adequate galvanic protection, the rudder—a critical part for steering the vessel—would suffer pitting, erosion, and structural weakening that compromise safety and maneuverability during navigation.

When to replace this part?

Zinc anodes should be inspected at least once a season and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, have a badly eroded, irregular surface, or appear whitish deposits indicating that the active material has been depleted. In areas with high electrolytic activity - ports with strong stray electrical current or waters with high conductivity - a mid-season review may be necessary. Replacing the anode preventively at the beginning of each nautical campaign is the most effective measure to avoid irreversible damage to the rudder and the stainless steel or bronze parts of the steering system.
