ANODO TIMON PAR USA Ø 72mm (MG)
Description
Function and technical context
This pair of rudder anode, made of magnesium alloy (MG) and with a diameter of 72 mm, is part of the boat's cathodic protection system. Its function is to act as a sacrificial electrode in the rudder area, absorbing galvanic corrosion that would otherwise attack the structural metal surfaces of the rudder and adjacent hull elements. When installed in pairs (pair), it guarantees a balanced and symmetrical protective coverage around the axis or rudder stock, being especially suitable for boats that navigate in fresh or low salinity waters, an environment in which magnesium offers the electrochemical potential necessary for effective protection. If this anode wears out completely without being replaced, galvanic corrosion will advance on the rudder and nearby metal parts, potentially compromising the structural integrity of the boat's steering system.
When to replace this part?
Sacrificial anodes should be inspected at least once a season, and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, since below that level their cathodic protection capacity is drastically reduced. Clear signs that the anode needs immediate replacement are a very irregular, eroded or practically consumed surface, as well as the appearance of pits or oxidation stains on the rudder itself. Replacing the pair of anodes preventively at each grounding or annual inspection is the recommended practice to avoid irreversible damage to the rudder and costly repairs in the naval workshop.
