Description

Function and technical context

This pair of 47mm diameter magnesium (MG) rudder anodes is designed to protect the rudder and submerged metal components of vessels using the principle of galvanic cathodic protection. Acting as a sacrificial metal, the anode preferentially corrodes the stainless steel, aluminum or bronze parts of the rudder, preventing them from being attacked by the electrolytic action of water. The magnesium composition makes it especially suitable for vessels that sail or remain anchored in fresh waters or waters with low conductivity, where conventional zinc anodes are insufficient. If the anode is depleted without being replaced in time, the rudder and its stock are exposed to accelerated galvanic corrosion that can compromise the structural integrity of the boat's steering system, leading to costly repairs in the dock.

When to replace this part?

The rudder anodes should be visually inspected at each grounding and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, regardless of the time elapsed; Under normal conditions of use, this usually occurs once per nautical season. A clear symptom that the anode has stopped fulfilling its function is the appearance of pitting, surface oxidation or discoloration on the stock or on the metal surfaces adjacent to the rudder. The advice of maintenance professionals is to replace the anodes preventively at each annual dry start: the cost of a pair of anodes is minimal compared to repairing or replacing a corroded rudder.
