Description

Function and technical context

This aluminum pair rudder anode with a diameter of 47 mm acts as sacrificial galvanic protection in the boat's steering system, specifically on the rudder shaft or pin. Its function is to rust in a controlled manner instead of the structural metal components of the rudder—stainless steel, bronze or brass—protecting them from electrolytic corrosion produced by the potential difference between different metals submerged in salt or brackish water. The pair (two-piece set) ensures uniform coverage around the shaft, maximizing the protective surface. If this anode is completely consumed without being replaced, galvanic corrosion directly attacks the rudder stock and its hardware, which can compromise the maneuverability of the boat and lead to high-cost structural repairs.

When to replace this part?

Rudder anodes should be visually inspected at least once a season and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, without waiting for them to disappear completely. The symptoms of an exhausted anode are evident: whitish or grayish color, very irregular surface and notable reduction in volume compared to the new anode. In vessels that navigate in waters with high conductivity or that remain in port for a long time with electrical current on board, the useful life can be significantly shortened, so it is recommended to check the condition at each docking or seasonal maintenance. Replacing the anode preventively is the most economical measure to avoid irreversible damage to the rudder stock.
