Function and technical context

This 40mm sacrificial anode for Renault marine engines acts as a cathodic protector, absorbing galvanic corrosion that would otherwise attack the structural metal parts of the engine and transmission. It works within the anti-corrosion protection system of the propulsion assembly, deliberately exposing itself to the electrolytic medium of salt, brackish or fresh water to preserve the most valuable components: casings, axles, covers and metal bodies. Its correct installation and periodic replacement is critical: an exhausted anode leaves adjacent parts unprotected, causing pitting, loss of material and structural failures that are difficult to repair.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the anode needs to be replaced is when it has lost between 50% and 75% of its mass, which indicates that the galvanic protection is close to being exhausted. It is recommended to inspect the anode at each beaching or at the beginning of each nautical season, and replace it preventively at least once a year in salt water or when its visual wear exceeds half of the material. Replacing it before it is completely consumed is the most economical practice: a worn anode that is not changed in time can lead to corrosion of structural parts of the engine whose repair or replacement involves a much higher cost.
