Description

Function and technical context

The propeller is the fundamental propulsion element that transforms the power of the engine into movement of the boat through controlled rotation in the water. In outboard and portable engines, the propeller works directly coupled to the engine output shaft, being responsible for generating the thrust necessary to move the boat. Its geometry and diameter are designed to optimize power transfer in a specific rev range, ensuring fuel efficiency and cruising performance. Progressive wear of the blades or a damaged propeller significantly reduces the available thrust, forcing the engine to work at higher revolutions to maintain speed, which generates overheating and excessive consumption.

When to replace this part?

A propeller requires periodic visual inspection to detect cracks, deformations, dents or erosion on the leading edges of the blades, common symptoms of impact against submerged objects, cavitation or simple wear and tear. It is recommended to check and clean the propeller at the beginning of each sailing season and perform a preventive replacement if structural damage is observed, since a compromised propeller reduces the power transferred and increases engine vibrations. Replacing a damaged propeller preventatively prevents costly engine and output shaft repairs and ensures safety when cruising and fishing.
