Description

Function and technical context

The Radice 40mm Shaft Coating Anode is a cathodic protection component specifically designed to be installed around the tailshaft of the vessel, acting as an electrochemical sacrifice against galvanic corrosion. Its function is to absorb the electrolytic attack that occurs when different metals—such as the bronze of the propeller, the stainless steel of the shaft, and the alloy of the horn—are submerged in salt or brackish water. Without this active protection, the shaft and adjacent transmission components would suffer accelerated corrosion, compromising the structural integrity of the driveline. The split clamp design of Radice shaft anodes allows for easy installation and replacement without the need to dismantle the propeller or take the boat ashore at each intervention.

When to replace this part?

Shaft anodes should be inspected at least once a season and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, have a very irregular surface, or have disappeared completely—a sure sign that the shaft has been left unprotected for a critical period. In boats that navigate in waters with high conductivity or with high eddy currents, consumption can be considerably faster, so it is recommended to check the condition of the anode also mid-season. Replacing the anode preventively is the most economical measure to avoid corrosion of the shaft, horn or propeller hub, breakdowns whose repair involves costs much higher than the price of a simple anode.
