The turbocharger is the component responsible for compressing the intake air before it enters the cylinders, significantly increasing the density of the air-fuel mixture and, with it, the power and performance of the marine diesel engine. It works within the supercharging system, harnessing the kinetic energy of the exhaust gases to drive the turbine that drives the compressor. In highly demanding engines such as the Yanmar 6LP series, the turbo is a critical part: its deterioration causes a drastic drop in power, increased fuel consumption and, in serious cases, internal damage to the engine due to excess temperature or poor lubrication. This unit corresponds to the Yanmar reference 119775-18010 (RHE62W turbine), located in section 9 of the official exploded view of the turbocharger.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a bad turbocharger include blue or black smoke from the exhaust, noticeable loss of power and acceleration, abnormal metallic noise or whistling noise coming from the turbo, and excessive oil consumption without any apparent visible leaks. In heavy-duty marine engines, it is recommended to inspect the turbocharger at each seasonal service, paying special attention to the shaft end play and the condition of the oil seals. Replacing the turbo at the first signs of wear prevents secondary damage to the engine that requires much higher cost repairs.
