Function and technical context

The NGK ZFR7F spark plug is part of the outboard engine's ignition system, being responsible for generating the electrical spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture inside each cylinder. Its correct operation directly determines the efficiency of combustion: a spark plug in poor condition causes incomplete combustion, increased fuel consumption and a notable loss of power in the propeller. As it is a component subjected to extreme thermal and electrical cycles, its progressive degradation affects cold starting, acceleration response and idle stability, symptoms that are often mistakenly confused with carburetion or injection problems.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a worn spark plug in an outboard engine include difficulty or failure to start, jerks and loss of speed during navigation, increased petrol consumption and the presence of black smoke or irregularities in the exhaust. For outboard engines in recreational use, it is recommended to check and replace the spark plugs every season or every 100 hours of operation, whichever comes first. Changing the spark plugs preventively at the beginning of each nautical season is one of the lowest cost interventions that prevents breakdowns at sea and prolongs the useful life of the engine.
