Function and technical context

The spark plug is the component responsible for generating the electrical spark that ignites the fuel and air mixture inside the combustion chamber, initiating the engine's power cycle. It works in the ignition system of the petrol engine in a four-stroke cycle, acting in sync with the electronic ignition to guarantee complete combustion in each cycle. The NGK DR7EA spark plug is manufactured for Honda outboard engines, where ignition reliability is critical for cold starting, throttle response and efficient fuel consumption. A worn electrode or a contaminated insulator causes irregular ignition, loss of power, increased consumption and difficulties in starting the engine, especially in humid marine conditions.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a bad spark plug are: difficulty or inability to start, irregular engine idling, jerking or loss of response when accelerating, visible increase in fuel consumption and, in advanced cases, black smoke from the exhaust. On Honda outboard engines, it is recommended to check and replace the spark plugs every 100 hours of operation or at the beginning of each boating season, whichever comes first.
