Description

Function and technical context

The NGK BR9ES spark plug is part of the outboard engine's ignition system, being the component responsible for generating the spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber. It works in high temperature and pressure environments, subjected to continuous ignition cycles that require materials with high dielectric and thermal resistance. A worn electrode or one with carbon deposits causes misfires, notable loss of power, increased fuel consumption and even unexpected stops while navigating. Keeping the spark plug in perfect condition is essential to ensure reliable starting, efficient combustion and long-term engine protection.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a bad spark plug are difficult or irregular starting, jerks or jerks during low-load navigation, increased consumption and the presence of black smoke from the exhaust indicative of a rich mixture not burning properly. As a general preventive maintenance guideline, it is recommended to check and replace outboard engine spark plugs every season or at the interval indicated by the engine manufacturer, usually between 100 and 200 hours of operation. Changing the spark plug preventively at the beginning of each season is one of the most economical and effective interventions to avoid breakdowns at sea and prolong the useful life of the engine.
