Description

Function and technical context

The NGK BR8HCS-10 spark plug is the element responsible for generating the electrical spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber of the outboard engine, being the starting point of the power cycle in each cylinder. It works integrated into the ignition system, continuously subjected to high voltage pulses, extreme pressure and sudden temperature changes at each engine detonation. The electrode of this reference is designed specifically for nautical environments, where the salinity of the environment, constant humidity and prolonged periods of inactivity increase the demands on the ignition components. When the spark plug loses its ability to generate a clean, consistent spark, the outboard motor immediately experiences loss of performance, combustion irregularities and starting problems that can compromise onboard safety.

When to replace this part?

The most common signs of a damaged spark plug in an outboard are unstable or vibrating idle, jerks and cuts during acceleration, difficulty starting when cold, increased petrol consumption and the presence of black smoke or the smell of unburned fuel in the exhaust. For outboard engines, the recommended replacement interval is every 100 hours of operation or at the beginning of each boating season, whichever comes first; Engines with long periods of shutdown during the winter are especially prone to having oxidized or deposited electrodes. Renewing spark plugs as part of season-opening maintenance is the most cost-effective preventive measure to ensure safe starting and avoid engine shutdown at sea.
