Description

Function and technical context

The NGK BR8ES-11 spark plug is part of the ignition system of petrol engines for nautical use, being the component responsible for generating the spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture inside the combustion chamber. Its correct operation guarantees complete and efficient combustion in each engine cycle, which translates directly into performance, throttle response and optimized fuel consumption. A worn electrode or a contaminated insulator causes misfires that manifest as jerks, loss of power and difficulty starting, especially when cold. The reference BR8ES-11 incorporates a predefined electrode gap of 1.1 mm, a characteristic that distinguishes it from the standard BR8ES version and which must be scrupulously respected to guarantee ignition efficiency under the working conditions of the marine engine.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a bad spark plug in a marine engine are: difficult or no starting, unstable idle, irregular vibrations in the engine, increased fuel consumption and exhaust emissions with the smell of unburned petrol. In marine engines, NGK recommends replacing spark plugs every 100 hours of operation or at the beginning of each boating season, whichever comes first, as humidity, salt and prolonged thermal cycling accelerate electrode wear and ceramic insulator degradation. Replacing the spark plugs preventively during seasonal maintenance is a low-cost measure that prevents navigation breakdowns and ensures reliable starting at all times.
