Description

Function and technical context

The spark plug is the component responsible for generating the electrical spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture within the combustion chamber of the outboard engine. It works in the ignition system of a two- or four-stroke petrol engine, subjected to continuous cycles of high voltage, extreme pressure and high temperature. The NGK reference BR8ES is a standard type spark plug with integrated resistance, especially indicated for outboard engines that require a thermal grade 8, which makes it suitable for sustained work regimes in navigation. A worn electrode or a spark plug with the incorrect gap causes incomplete combustion, which results in loss of power, increased fuel consumption and possible damage to the catalyst or the cylinder itself. Regular replacement of spark plugs is one of the most cost-effective maintenance interventions to ensure engine performance and reliability at sea.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a bad spark plug in an outboard engine include difficult or rough starting when cold, jerking and loss of acceleration under full load, unstable idling, and higher fuel consumption than usual. As a preventive maintenance reference, NGK recommends checking or replacing standard spark plugs every 100 hours of use or at the beginning of each nautical season, whichever comes first, especially in engines that frequently work at high speed or in salt water. Changing the spark plug preventively before a long voyage or at the beginning of the season is a common practice among naval mechanics, since the cost of the part is minimal compared to a breakdown at sea or a cylinder head disassembly due to electrode fouling.
