NGK BR10ES SPARK PLUG
Description
Function and technical context
The spark plug is the component responsible for generating the electrical spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture within the combustion chamber of the outboard engine. It works in the ignition system, acting as the last link between the ignition coil and the actual combustion process. A bad spark plug causes incomplete or erratic combustion, which results in loss of power, increased fuel consumption and difficulty starting the engine, especially in cold or humid marine conditions. The NGK reference BR10ES is a spark plug widely specified for two- and four-stroke petrol outboard engines, recognized for its reliability in high salinity and variable temperature environments typical of navigation.
When to replace this part?
The most common symptoms of a worn or contaminated spark plug in an outboard engine include difficult or failed starting, rough idling, jerking or loss of response to acceleration, and in advanced cases, unexpected engine shutdowns. As a general preventive maintenance rule, it is recommended to check and replace the spark plugs every boating season or approximately every 100 hours of boating, whichever comes first. Changing the spark plug preventively before each season is one of the most economical interventions that can be carried out and avoids being left adrift due to a misfire on the high seas.
