Function and technical context

The NGK BPZ8HN-10 spark plug is the component responsible for generating the electric spark that initiates combustion in the cylinder of the petrol outboard or inboard engine. It works directly in the ignition system, supporting continuous cycles of high voltage and extreme temperatures within the combustion chamber. A worn electrode or a carbon deposit on the spark plug causes misfires, loss of power, increased fuel consumption and, in the worst cases, impossible starting while sailing. The NGK reference BPZ8HN-10 incorporates a 1.0 mm electrode gap from the factory, eliminating manual adjustment and ensuring an accurate and repeatable spark right out of the box.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a damaged spark plug in marine engines are: difficult or irregular starting, jerks or hesitation at mid-throttle, unstable idle and a visible increase in petrol consumption. Outboard engine manufacturers recommend checking and replacing spark plugs every 100 hours of operation or at the beginning of each boating season, whichever comes first. Changing the spark plugs preventively is one of the lowest cost interventions that avoids being left without propulsion at sea due to a misfire.
