Description

Function and technical context

The NGK BPR8ES spark plug is part of the outboard engine's ignition system, being responsible for generating the electrical spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber. Its correct operation directly determines the efficiency of the explosion cycle: a spark plug in good condition guarantees complete combustion, while a deteriorated one causes misfires, excessive fuel consumption and carbon deposits in the chamber. The BPR8ES reference responds to a specific NGK technical coding that indicates the type of thread, the thermal range and the configuration of the electrode, critical factors for correct adaptation to the engine. Installing a spark plug with the wrong thermal rating can cause anything from self-ignition to insufficient cooling of the electrode, compromising the integrity of the engine in the short term.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a worn spark plug in an outboard include difficult or irregular starting, jerks and loss of power at medium and high revolutions, increased petrol consumption and abnormal vibrations at idle. As a general rule, it is recommended to check the spark plugs during each seasonal maintenance and replace them every 100 hours of use or once a year in frequently used boats. Replacing the spark plug preventively is one of the most economical interventions in nautical maintenance and prevents navigation breakdowns that are much more expensive to resolve away from the port.
